India’s fast-growing digital payments ecosystem is entering a new phase with Razorpay Vulcan, a transformer-based AI foundation model designed specifically for payments. Razorpay describes Vulcan as India’s first AI foundation model built for the payments ecosystem, with the goal of making digital transactions more reliable, secure and predictable.

Developed using technology from NVIDIA and Amazon Web Services (AWS), Vulcan is designed to address several payment challenges at once, including failed transactions, fraud, risk assessment, payment routing and checkout friction.

What Makes Razorpay Vulcan Different?

Traditional payment platforms often use separate machine-learning systems for different tasks, such as fraud detection, risk scoring and transaction routing. Vulcan takes a broader approach by acting as a shared intelligence layer across multiple payment functions.

Razorpay says Vulcan was trained using approximately 3 trillion data points from 4 billion transactions, allowing it to identify patterns across a large and diverse payments network. The model processes thousands of signals associated with transactions to help make real-time decisions.

Vulcan FeaturePotential Benefit
AI-powered routingHelps improve transaction success
Fraud detectionIdentifies suspicious payment patterns
Risk assessmentSupports more informed payment decisions
Checkout intelligenceReduces friction for customers

How Vulcan Could Improve Online Payments

Payment failures can create frustration for customers and lost sales for businesses. Razorpay says early deployments with businesses including Blinkit, Bachatt and redBus have shown 8–10% improvements in payment success rates. The company also reported significantly stronger international card fraud detection and more efficient identification of fraudulent transactions.

The model is also intended to make checkout experiences more personalized. For example, Razorpay reported that 40% more users were shown their preferred UPI application, contributing to additional monthly transactions.

Why AI Is Becoming Important for India’s Fintech Industry

India’s digital payments market involves multiple payment methods, banks, issuers, gateways and consumer behaviors. This complexity creates a large amount of transaction data that can potentially be used to improve payment infrastructure.

Vulcan represents a shift from using AI for isolated tasks toward building a unified intelligence system for payments. Razorpay’s broader AI strategy also includes agentic payments and voice-based commerce, indicating that the company sees artificial intelligence as an important part of the future payment experience.

What’s Next for Razorpay Vulcan?

Razorpay plans to expand Vulcan beyond its initial applications, with potential uses across areas such as lending, authentication and payment routing.

The launch could mark an important development in fintech AI, particularly because Vulcan is designed around payment behavior rather than general-purpose language tasks. As digital transactions continue to grow, technologies that can improve reliability while strengthening security could have a significant impact on both merchants and consumers.

Razorpay Vulcan therefore represents more than a new AI model—it signals a move toward AI-driven payment infrastructure, where intelligent systems increasingly work behind the scenes to make transactions faster, safer and more seamless.
