Google is introducing major upgrades to the Gemini app ahead of Google I/O 2026, including a new “Extended” thinking mode and deeper third-party app integrations. The update is designed to make Gemini more intelligent, context-aware, and useful for everyday productivity tasks.

The new “Thinking level” feature gives users more control over how Gemini processes prompts. Users can now choose between “Standard” and “Extended” reasoning modes when using Gemini 3 Flash and Gemini 3.1 Pro models. Extended mode appears to generate more detailed and thoughtful responses, especially for complex tasks like coding, planning, and research.

Google is also expanding Gemini’s ecosystem with upcoming integrations for third-party services such as Canva, Instacart, and OpenTable. These integrations aim to let users complete real-world tasks directly inside Gemini without switching apps.

According to community discussions on Reddit, some users are already seeing the new thinking controls appear in the Gemini mobile app, although the rollout seems limited for now. Others are particularly interested in the growing number of app connectors, comparing Google’s approach to AI ecosystems from OpenAI and Anthropic.

Final Thoughts

Google’s latest Gemini updates signal a major shift toward AI-powered assistants that can actively interact with apps and services instead of simply answering questions. With Extended Thinking and third-party integrations, Gemini is evolving into a more capable productivity platform that could eventually become deeply integrated across Android, Chrome, and Google services.
