Apple has reportedly signed a multiyear NAND flash memory supply agreement as the company prepares for its next major iPhone launch amid a tightening global memory market. The reported agreement could help secure NAND supplies for upcoming devices, but it is unlikely to eliminate the cost pressure created by rapidly rising memory prices.

TrendForce reported that South Korea’s Economy Tribune said Apple had recently turned to a long-term supply agreement for NAND. The supplier, contract volume and detailed pricing terms remain undisclosed. Market watchers cited by TrendForce have identified Japan’s Kioxia as the likely partner, but neither company has publicly confirmed the reported agreement.

Apple NAND Costs Rise Sharply

The reported Apple NAND agreement comes as memory costs have become a major concern for smartphone manufacturers.

TrendForce estimates that memory costs for the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro could be nearly 400% higher in the third quarter of 2026 than a year earlier. This figure applies to the memory component cost and does not mean the overall manufacturing cost of the iPhone has increased by 400%.

Apple is reportedly attempting to offset some of the pressure by negotiating lower prices for other components. However, TrendForce expects those savings to be insufficient to completely offset higher memory costs.

Kioxia Seen as Likely Partner

Kioxia has been identified as the most likely supplier behind the reported Apple NAND agreement because of its existing relationship with Apple and its position as a major NAND manufacturer.

However, this should not be treated as a confirmed Apple-Kioxia contract. TrendForce states that the counterparty, purchase volume and pricing terms have not been disclosed. Reports suggesting a three-to-five-year term or the absence of a fixed price ceiling should therefore be treated as market reporting rather than confirmed contract details.

Earlier reports also indicated that Apple had agreed to pay higher prices for Kioxia NAND beginning in the first quarter of 2026, with subsequent pricing adjustments linked to market conditions. Those reports provide additional context for the current supply situation but do not independently confirm the newly reported long-term agreement.

AI Demand Is Tightening the Memory Market

Apple’s supply concerns are part of a much broader memory-market squeeze.

AI data centres are consuming large quantities of high-bandwidth memory and server memory, encouraging manufacturers to prioritize higher-value products. This is contributing to tighter supply and higher prices across parts of the broader memory market.

The impact is increasingly being felt by consumer electronics companies. Recent industry coverage reports that some memory components have experienced dramatic price increases, putting pressure on manufacturers to either absorb higher costs, reduce production or raise device prices.

For Apple, securing sufficient NAND capacity could therefore become as important as negotiating the lowest possible price.

Foldable iPhone Adds More Supply Pressure

The memory squeeze comes just before Apple’s September product event, where the company is expected to introduce its next-generation premium iPhone lineup and its first foldable iPhone.

The foldable model is expected to require substantial quantities of high-end components, making supply planning particularly important during its initial production period. TrendForce has estimated that Apple’s foldable iPhone could start at around $2,099 to $2,299, although those figures remain estimates until Apple announces its official pricing.

Analysts have also warned that memory shortages could constrain the initial availability of some upcoming iPhone models. These forecasts should be viewed as supply-chain estimates rather than confirmation of Apple’s final production numbers.

Will Apple Raise iPhone Prices?

Higher memory costs are likely to put additional pressure on Apple’s iPhone pricing strategy.

TrendForce has indicated that Apple could raise prices while absorbing part of the additional component costs to limit the impact on consumers. Some market reports have suggested increases for premium iPhone models, but Apple has not confirmed final pricing.

The reported Apple NAND agreement could help the company secure supply and improve production planning, but a long-term contract does not automatically guarantee lower memory prices.

What the Apple NAND Deal Means

The reported Apple NAND agreement highlights a significant change in the memory market. Apple has traditionally used its enormous purchasing scale to negotiate aggressively with suppliers. The current supply environment, however, is making memory capacity more valuable as AI infrastructure competes for semiconductor resources.

Securing NAND through a multiyear agreement could give Apple greater visibility over future supply, even if the company has to accept higher prices. It may also indicate that Apple is placing greater emphasis on guaranteed capacity as memory availability becomes less predictable.

At the same time, the reported agreement does not mean Apple has solved its wider memory challenge. DRAM remains another important component, and TrendForce has suggested that the market could watch for similar long-term agreements covering mobile DRAM in the future.

Conclusion

The reported Apple NAND agreement comes at a critical time for the company as memory prices rise and AI demand puts additional pressure on global semiconductor capacity. Kioxia is considered the likely partner, but the supplier and commercial terms have not been officially confirmed.

For Apple, the priority appears to be securing reliable memory supply for future devices while managing the impact of higher component costs. With the next iPhone generation and Apple’s expected foldable model approaching launch, NAND availability, memory pricing and the final retail prices will be closely watched.
