Reliance Jio is reportedly targeting September 2027 for a test flight of its planned low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network, marking another major development in India’s emerging satellite broadband market.

According to a September 8 report by The Economic Times, Jio plans to launch a small number of satellites during the initial test to evaluate hardware, software and other technologies before beginning larger-scale deployment. The reported plan calls for mass deployment to begin in early 2028.

The development could place Jio in more direct competition with satellite connectivity providers such as SpaceX’s Starlink, Eutelsat OneWeb and Amazon Leo.

Jio’s 1,600-Satellite Plan

Jio has been developing a proposed constellation of approximately 1,600 LEO satellites, with earlier reporting placing the planned orbital altitude at around 650 kilometres.

In July 2026, IN-SPACe judged Jio’s proposal technically sound following its evaluation with relevant government agencies. However, this should not be interpreted as meaning the network is already operational or that all regulatory and international orbital-coordination requirements have been completed.

These dates and figures are reported targets rather than guaranteed milestones, as Jio has not publicly confirmed the September 2027 test-flight schedule.

Proposed Network Capacity

The planned Jio Satellite network could eventually provide substantial connectivity capacity.

The Economic Times reports that individual satellites could offer approximately 100–150 Gbps of throughput, while around 30–32 satellites could be positioned over India at a given time. This would translate into a projected combined capacity of approximately 4–4.8 Tbps over India.

These figures describe planned or projected network capacity, rather than current consumer internet speeds or demonstrated performance.

The proposed network is intended to support broadband connectivity in areas where terrestrial infrastructure can be difficult or expensive to deploy. Satellite connectivity could complement existing mobile, fibre and fixed-wireless networks, particularly in remote and underserved locations.

A New Phase for Satellite Internet in India

Jio Satellite is entering a market that is becoming increasingly competitive.

Jio’s proposed constellation would give the company its own satellite infrastructure while complementing its existing telecommunications network. The company’s broader plans include satellite-based connectivity for areas where conventional networks face geographical or infrastructure limitations.

For consumers and businesses in remote areas, additional satellite operators could eventually provide more connectivity options. However, the commercial impact will depend on factors such as pricing, coverage, terminal costs, network capacity and regulatory approvals.

India Advances Satellite Spectrum Framework

India’s satellite communications regulatory framework is also developing.

In September 2026, India’s Digital Communications Commission approved the framework for satellite spectrum allocation following TRAI recommendations. The framework covers operators including Reliance Jio, Starlink and Eutelsat OneWeb, establishing an important regulatory foundation for satellite broadband services in India.

However, spectrum allocation should not be confused with commercial launch approval. Jio still needs to complete the necessary steps before its proposed network can become operational.

Jio Satellite vs. Starlink

Jio’s proposed entry could intensify competition in India’s satellite internet market.

Starlink already operates a large global LEO constellation, while OneWeb and Amazon Leo are also pursuing satellite connectivity opportunities. Jio could potentially leverage its established telecommunications infrastructure and large customer base alongside its planned satellite network.

However, it is too early to determine whether Jio Satellite will outperform competing services.

The eventual competitive position will depend on satellite deployment, network performance, pricing, coverage, spectrum availability, regulatory requirements and the cost of customer equipment.

What About Jio’s IPO?

Jio Platforms’ planned $3.8 billion IPO is another major development for the company. SEBI approved the IPO in August 2026, with 270 million shares planned for issue.

Reuters reported that approximately ₹275 billion ($3.3 billion) of the proceeds are expected to be used to repay debt at Reliance Jio Infocomm.

The IPO should therefore not be described as directly financing the Jio Satellite project unless Reliance provides such confirmation.

What Comes Next?

If the reported September 2027 test flight goes ahead, it could become an important milestone for Jio’s satellite ambitions.

The test would allow the company to evaluate satellite hardware, software and related technologies before a larger deployment. According to the reported plan, Jio could then begin deploying satellites at a faster pace from 2028 onward.

Several steps would still remain before a fully operational constellation, including satellite manufacturing, launches, ground infrastructure, regulatory compliance, spectrum arrangements and orbital coordination.
