Anthropic Expands Claude India with In-Country AI Processing Through AWS
Table of Contents
Anthropic has announced that Claude India will soon offer in-country inference through Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Amazon Bedrock. The new capability will allow organisations in India to process AI requests using infrastructure located within the country, helping them comply with local data residency regulations. The rollout is expected to begin over the coming weeks.
The initiative is expected to benefit enterprises and public sector organisations that manage sensitive information and require AI solutions that align with India’s data governance standards.
Enabling AI While Keeping Data Within India
The latest update for Claude India is aimed at industries where compliance and data security are critical. These include banking, insurance, telecommunications, and government agencies, all of which must follow strict regulations when handling customer and citizen data.
Instead of routing AI workloads to servers outside India, organisations will be able to process data domestically through Amazon Bedrock. This approach is intended to simplify regulatory compliance while giving enterprises access to Anthropic’s latest AI capabilities.
Irina Ghose, Managing Director of Anthropic India, said organisations responsible for the data of more than a billion people need AI solutions that can operate without moving sensitive information across borders. She noted that local processing can help businesses move AI projects from limited pilots to large-scale production deployments.
Enterprise Deployment Through Amazon Bedrock
The new Claude India service will be delivered through Amazon Bedrock, AWS’s managed platform for foundation models.
According to Sandeep Dutta, President of AWS India and South Asia, enterprises will be able to deploy Claude using the same secure cloud environment they already trust for critical business applications. He added that local AI processing could support digital transformation projects across both private and public sector organisations.
To meet enterprise requirements, deployments will include several built-in governance capabilities, including:
- Audit logging
- Role-based access controls
- Security and compliance features
These tools are designed to help organisations satisfy internal governance policies and regulatory standards before deploying AI-powered applications into production.
India Emerges as a Key Market for Claude
Anthropic also highlighted India’s growing importance in its global expansion strategy.
According to estimates cited by Inc42, India contributes between 5.8% and 7.2% of Claude’s worldwide usage, making it the company’s second-largest market after the United States.
A number of leading Indian organisations are already using Claude for business operations:
- Axis Bank uses Claude to support engineering and productivity initiatives.
- National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is building its AiNxt agentic AI platform using Claude.
- Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has enabled Claude for more than 50,000 associates.
- Infosys is integrating Claude into its enterprise AI platform, Topaz.
Kotak Mahindra Bank Managing Director Ashok Vaswani welcomed the announcement, describing it as a positive development for India’s AI ecosystem.
Competition in India’s AI Market Continues to Grow
The launch of Claude India comes as technology companies continue expanding AI infrastructure for enterprise customers in India.
Google recently introduced in-country inference for Gemini 3.5 Flash to help businesses meet similar data residency requirements. Meanwhile, Indian AI startup Sarvam AI has positioned locally hosted AI inference as a core part of its enterprise strategy.
Anthropic has also strengthened its long-term presence in India by opening a Bengaluru office earlier this year, introducing subscription pricing in Indian rupees, and announcing plans to certify 5,000 professionals through its partner network to accelerate AI adoption.
