The International Cricket Council (ICC) has revealed the 12 venues selected for the 2027 Cricket World Cup, which will bring the tournament back to the African continent for the first time in 24 years. Scheduled to take place during October and November 2027, the event will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, featuring 14 teams competing across 57 matches in a new three-stage format.

The venues were unveiled at an official launch event held at the Inanda Polo Club in Johannesburg. The event brought together several renowned cricket personalities, including Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla, Kagiso Rabada, Temba Bavuma, and Zimbabwe’s Hamilton Masakadza, to mark the beginning of preparations for the global tournament.

Twelve Venues Across Three Host Nations

The 2027 Cricket World Cup will be played across 12 venues located in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Tournament Identity Inspired by African Culture

Alongside the venue announcement, the ICC introduced the tournament’s official brand with the tagline “Make the Circle Bigger.”

The branding is inspired by the African philosophy of Ubuntu, which reflects unity, togetherness, and shared humanity. The visual identity also draws inspiration from traditional Southern African woven wire bowls, while the official colour palette features Zimbabwe Chilli, Namib Dune, and Harare Dawn, representing the cultural identity of the three host nations.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah described the tournament’s return to Africa after 24 years as a landmark moment for international cricket and expressed confidence that South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia would showcase the region’s warmth, passion, and diversity throughout the competition.

New Three-Stage Tournament Format

The 2027 Cricket World Cup will feature a revised competition structure designed to add more competitive matches before the knockout rounds.

The tournament will begin with a Super Series, where the teams ranked 12th to 14th will compete to determine the final qualifier for the main tournament.

The main competition will then consist of:

  • Twelve teams divided into two groups of six
  • A 30-match group stage
  • The top seven teams advancing to the Super Seven stage, featuring 21 matches
  • The top four teams qualifying for the semi-finals
  • The winners of the semi-finals competing in the final

This format introduces an additional stage before the knockout rounds while maintaining opportunities for teams to progress through consistent performances.

Defending Champions

Australia will begin the 2027 Cricket World Cup as the defending champions, having secured the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup title in India in 2023. As the reigning title holders, they will look to defend their crown against the world’s leading ODI teams when the tournament returns to Africa.

Why This Matters

The 2027 Cricket World Cup represents an important milestone for international cricket by bringing the tournament back to Africa after more than two decades. Namibia’s inclusion as a host nation for its first senior ICC event also reflects the ICC’s commitment to expanding cricket into emerging markets while providing fans with a broader international experience.

The new tournament format, combined with culturally inspired branding and matches across three host nations, is expected to make the competition one of the most distinctive editions of the Cricket World Cup.

Conclusion

The 2027 Cricket World Cup is set to be a landmark edition, combining a return to Africa with a fresh tournament format and a culturally inspired identity. With 12 venues spread across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, the event will showcase top-level international cricket while highlighting the heritage and hospitality of the host nations. As teams prepare to compete across 57 matches, the tournament promises to deliver an exciting chapter in ODI cricket on African soil.
