WhatsApp Outage Disrupts Photo and Video Sharing for Users Worldwide

WhatsApp outage

A widespread WhatsApp outage affected thousands of users across multiple countries on 3 August, causing many users to experience problems sending photos, videos, stickers, and other multimedia files through the Meta-owned messaging platform. While text messages continued to work for many users, media uploads often failed, remained stuck with loading indicators, or displayed “Retry” error messages.

Reports of the WhatsApp outage quickly spread across several regions as outage-tracking services recorded a sharp increase in user complaints.

Media Sharing Problems Reported Across Multiple Countries

The WhatsApp outage began attracting widespread attention during the late afternoon Eastern Time as users reported difficulties sharing multimedia content.

According to Downdetector, approximately 70% of reported issues were related to message sending, with media uploads accounting for a significant portion of the complaints. Users in the United Kingdom, France, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Spain, and Colombia all reported similar issues.

Many users noted that text messages were still being delivered, while images, videos, stickers, and other media files either remained stuck during upload or generated “Retry” error messages.

Additional Issues Reported During the Outage

Beyond media-sharing problems, the WhatsApp outage appeared to affect other platform features for some users.

Several users reported that their accounts were unexpectedly placed under review by automated systems, temporarily preventing access. Others experienced issues posting WhatsApp Status updates or encountered connectivity-related errors.

According to StatusGator, the disruption began at approximately 8:10 p.m. on 3 August and lasted for nearly six hours, with message sending and media uploads among the primary issues. Outage monitoring service Downforeveryoneorjustme also confirmed it detected a WhatsApp outage during the same period.

Meanwhile, WABetaInfo posted on X that a bug in the latest WhatsApp Beta for Android prevented some beta users from sending media files. However, Meta did not confirm the cause of the outage or whether it was related to the reported Android beta bug, and no direct connection between the two has been established.

Meta Had Not Confirmed the Cause

As of Monday evening, Meta had not publicly identified the cause of the WhatsApp outage or provided a timeline for restoring full service.

Users also reported that common troubleshooting steps—including restarting devices, switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, clearing the app cache, and reinstalling WhatsApp—did not resolve the issue.

Some users also reported that WhatsApp Web and the desktop version continued to work as expected, even though media uploads on the mobile app were still experiencing issues.
