China is accelerating research into military applications for humanoid robots as defence institutions examine how the machines could potentially support troops in future conflicts.
A Reuters investigation published on September 7 found that Chinese military institutions have been acquiring robotic technologies, commissioning research and studying how humanoid robots could operate alongside soldiers. Reuters reviewed more than 100 Chinese military procurement notices, academic studies, patents, official publications, government records and defence-company materials.
However, there is an important distinction between research and deployment. There is currently no evidence that China has deployed armed humanoid robots with an operational People’s Liberation Army (PLA) unit. The available evidence points to research, procurement, testing and preparation for potential future military applications.
China Expands Military Research Into Humanoid Robots
The development of China humanoid robots is taking place alongside the country’s rapidly expanding commercial robotics industry.
According to Reuters’ investigation, military research gained momentum during 2025 and 2026. The focus extends beyond building the physical machines, with Chinese institutions studying robot perception, manipulation and the data systems needed to train robots for more complex environments.
One June 2026 procurement document reviewed by Reuters showed that the PLA budgeted approximately $300,000 for a system designed to collect and label camera, radar and motion data for humanoid robots, including information about terrain they could navigate.
The development of these supporting systems is significant because robots operating alongside soldiers would need to understand and respond to environments that are far less predictable than controlled demonstrations.
Humanoid Robots Could Support Future Urban Operations
Chinese military researchers have also examined possible uses for robotic systems in urban combat scenarios.
A 2025 study by researchers at the National University of Defense Technology described a hypothetical operation involving six “combat robots.” The systems could include humanoid robots, robot dogs or unmanned vehicles working alongside ground troops to clear an enemy-occupied building.
The researchers’ scenario suggested that such technology could potentially become available within five to 10 years. This is a research projection rather than a confirmed PLA deployment timetable.
Potential applications being explored include reconnaissance, patrols, logistics and missions considered particularly dangerous for human personnel.
Norinco’s Fuxi Highlights Defence Industry Interest
Military interest in humanoid robots has also extended into China’s defence industry.
State-owned defence conglomerate Norinco has developed the Fuxi humanoid robot. Company materials described the full-size machine as being designed for roles including sentry duty, all-weather reconnaissance, intelligent patrols and dangerous missions, according to Reuters.
Fuxi can also be operated remotely through a teleoperation system. Human teleoperation keeps an operator involved in controlling the system and can reduce reliance on autonomous decision-making.
However, the capabilities described for Fuxi come from Norinco’s own company materials. They should not be interpreted as evidence that the robot is already being used by operational PLA combat units.

China’s Robotics Industry Could Support Development
Military research is emerging alongside China’s large commercial robotics sector.
According to BofA Global Research, Chinese manufacturers accounted for approximately 95% of global humanoid robot shipments in 2025. This is an industry estimate rather than an independent measure of China’s military capability.
A large domestic robotics ecosystem could nevertheless give Chinese institutions access to manufacturers, components and engineering expertise as they investigate potential defence applications.
Commercial success does not automatically mean that humanoid robots are ready for military deployment. Developing a robot that can perform demonstrations is very different from creating a reliable system capable of operating for extended periods in unpredictable battlefield conditions.
Humanoid Robots Still Face Major Challenges
Humanoid robots continue to face significant technical limitations.
Energy consumption, movement, perception and reliability remain major challenges. Battlefield environments would add further complications, including uneven terrain, unpredictable obstacles, weather, communications problems and rapidly changing situations.
Reuters reported that experts and Chinese military researchers continue to identify technical barriers that need to be addressed before humanoids could become widespread military systems.
The distinction between demonstrations and practical deployment is therefore important. A robot capable of walking, running or completing a controlled task does not necessarily have the reliability, endurance or decision-making capabilities required for military operations.
The United States Is Also Exploring Military Humanoids
China is not alone in investigating potential military applications for humanoid robots.
The U.S. Army’s xTechHumanoid programme is seeking innovative humanoid technologies that could advance toward fielded militarized capabilities. The programme includes live experimentation with selected finalists and is designed to explore technologies that could support soldiers in complex and high-risk environments.
The parallel programmes show that humanoid robotics is becoming part of broader military technology research in both countries.
However, the available evidence does not establish that either China or the United States currently has operational humanoid combat units. The two programmes are better understood as research, experimentation and technology-development efforts.
Human Control Raises Ethical Questions
The military development of humanoid robots also raises questions about autonomy and the use of force.
A remotely operated system keeps a human involved in controlling the machine. More autonomous systems, however, could eventually face difficult situations involving civilians, combatants, wounded personnel or people attempting to surrender.
The International Committee of the Red Cross has raised concerns about autonomous weapons’ ability to interpret human behaviour in complex situations. Reuters also reported that China’s defence ministry said in March that AI-powered weapons should remain under human control.
These questions could become increasingly important if military robots move from remote operation toward greater autonomy.
What China’s Humanoid Robot Push Means
The development of China humanoid robots is moving beyond commercial demonstrations and into military research, procurement and planning.
Chinese institutions are examining how humanoids and other robotic platforms could potentially assist troops with reconnaissance, logistics, hazardous missions and future urban operations. Norinco’s Fuxi shows that China’s defence industry is also developing humanoid platforms with potential military applications.
Yet the current evidence does not show that China has deployed armed humanoid robots with operational PLA units.
For now, China’s programme is best understood as research and preparation for potential future military applications. Whether humanoids can eventually overcome their energy, reliability, perception and autonomy challenges will determine how significant they become on future battlefields.
